Introduction

What is Generative AI?

Now we ask ourselves, What exactly is generative AI?. GenAI is a type of artificial intelligence that can create new content and ideas, including conversations, stories, images, videos and music. Like all artificial intelligence, GenAI works with machine learning models. However, GenAI is powered by very, very large models that are pre-trained on large collections of data and are commonly known as basic models or foundation models (FM). Recent advances in machine learning have led to the emergence of foundation models containing billions of parameters or variables.

When we talk about GenAI, concepts appear that we must take into account such as:

LLM Models: An LLM model (Large Language Models) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) used to carry out tasks related to natural language processing. These models are trained with large volumes of text and are capable of interpreting and responding to questions written in a specific language. LLMs are based on deep learning techniques, using artificial neural networks that consume and process massive data sets. Thanks to this intensive training, they can generate new text combinations that mimic natural language, based on the patterns and information learned from their training data.
RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation): RAG or retrieval augmented generation is an artificial intelligence framework that combines the advantages of traditional information retrieval systems (such as databases) with the capabilities of generative large language models (LLM). By combining this additional knowledge with its own language skills, AI can write text that is more accurate, up-to-date, and relevant to specific needs.

This diagram illustrates the recovery augmented generation framework, where:

The user requests the recovery model.
The retrieval model queries the company's internal sources (knowledge bases and business systems) for the most relevant documents and datasets.
The retrieval model augments the user's original message with additional contextual information and passes it as input to the generation model (LLM API).
The LLM uses the augmented message to generate a more informed response and then sends it to the user.

Alibaba Cloud Model Studio

As response to this technological evolution, Alibaba Cloud offers a service called Alibaba Cloud Model Studio which is basically a comprehensive platform created specifically for the development of generative artificial intelligence. It currently offers easy access to leading models in the industry, such as Qwen-Max, Qwen-Plus, Qwen-Turbo and the Qwen 2 series. With this service, it is possible to customize these models using the data of our company or business, using the framework of Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) with just one click. In addition, it allows the creation of AI agents in a few steps and the development of generative AI (GenAI) applications that can be adapted to the business, without the need to worry about the underlying infrastructure or the computing power that is offered by Alibaba Cloud. All of this is done on an isolated cloud network, reducing privacy risks.

The service was launched at the beginning of July 2024 and is enabled in the Singapore region, it will soon be available in more Alibaba Cloud regions.

Model LLC Qwen (Tongyi Qianwen)

Qwen is a series of large language models (LLM) independently developed by Alibaba Cloud. Qwen can understand and analyze users' natural language input to provide them with services and assistance in different fields and tasks.

The Qwen Series uses its powerful language processing capabilities to provide users with an intelligent and efficient language service experience. Its capabilities include, but are not limited to, text creation, translation services, and dialogue simulation. The Qwen series is suitable for the following scenarios:

Text creation: write stories, official documents, emails, scripts, and poems.
Text processing: processes the text and summarizes it.
Programming assistance: Write and optimize code.
Translation: Provides translations in multiple languages, including English, Japanese, French, and Spanish.
Dialogue simulation: Participate in role-playing for interactive dialogues.
Data Visualization: Create charts and visualize data.

There are currently 3 versions of the LLM Qwen model:

Qwen-Turbo: This model is an ultra-large language model that supports multiple input languages, such as Chinese and English.
Qwen-Plus: This model is an upgraded version of Qwen-Turbo and supports multiple input languages such as Chinese and English.
Qwen-Max: This model is an ultra-large language model with a scale of one hundred billion parameters and supports multiple input languages such as Chinese and English. This model is updated periodically with continuous releases.
